What is TPO (Trimethylbenzoyldiphenylphosphine oxide)?
Trimethylbenzoyldiphenylphosphine oxide, also known as TPO, is a chemical compound with the CAS number 75980-60-8. TPO is a monoacylphosphine oxide photoinitiator used in various polymer matrices for effective curing and colour stability of resins. This compound is known for its ability to initiate photochemical reactions, making it useful in applications such as UV-curable coatings and adhesives.
Properties and Uses of TPO
TPO is an effective photoinitiator, whose photolysis products include three methylbenzoyl free radicals and two phenylphosphonyl free radicals, which have high initiation activity. TPO has excellent thermal stability and is stable at temperatures up to 180°C. This compound is also known for its low yellowing and photobleaching ability, which is advantageous for the transmission of ultraviolet light and curing of thick coatings.
Recent EU Regulations on TPO
According to the latest information, TPO is not regulated under the Cosmetic Regulation No. 1223/2009. This means its use in cosmetic products, such as nail modelling products, is limited to certain concentrations. Due to its potential risks, such as skin sensitisation and reproductive toxicity, it is important to follow safety guidelines when handling this chemical.
